Mirage
Invents new detail, most dramatic
Generates plausible detail rather than recovering what was there, so results are the most striking and the least faithful. Good for art and hero images, wrong for documents or evidence.
Output contains detail that was not in your file. It looks plausible and it is not a record of the original, so do not use it for documents, identification or anything that may be treated as evidence.
What Mirage is for
Mirage is the only model in the catalogue that invents. Rather than recovering detail from the source, it generates plausible new detail: texture on a surface that was a flat smear, grain where there was noise, structure where the original had none.
That produces the most striking output UpRes can make, and the least faithful. On a hero image or a piece of art that is exactly the trade you want. On a document, an ID, a product photo or anything that might later be treated as evidence, it is the wrong tool, and we say so on the model picker rather than burying it in a footnote.

Frequently asked questions
What does "invents detail" actually mean?
Mirage produces detail that was not present in your file. It looks plausible and it is not a record of the original. Anything that has to stay true to the source should use Prism, Flare or Lumen instead.
Should I use Mirage on a scanned document?
No. Use Prism. A generated character can be perfectly legible and wrong, which is worse than a blurry one that is right.
How far can Mirage upscale?
Up to 8x the linear dimensions.
Is Mirage slower than the other image models?
Yes. Generating detail costs more compute than recovering it, so expect a longer wait and a higher price per job than Flare.
