Background: ByteDance's Research Investment
ByteDance (TikTok's parent company) has one of the most active video AI research teams in the world. Their motivation is direct: TikTok processes billions of short videos, many uploaded from older phones or at low resolution. SeedVR was originally developed to improve the visual quality of user-generated content at the infrastructure level.
SeedVR2 is the second-generation architecture, scaled to 16 billion parameters — on par with large language model scale. It was released as a research model and made available via API. UpRes no longer exposes it. The current video path is Motion, and invented still detail is Mirage.
How Diffusion Upscaling Works
Traditional super-resolution models like Real-ESRGAN use a GAN (Generative Adversarial Network) trained to map a degraded image to a high-resolution output in a single forward pass. This is fast and consistent but the generator is constrained: it can only reconstruct detail present in its training distribution, and it must commit to a single output.
Diffusion models work differently. The model starts with a noisy latent representation of the input and iteratively denoises it over 20–50 steps, each step guided by the original low-resolution image as a conditioning signal. Each denoising step allows the model to "consider" what high-resolution detail is plausible and consistent with both the source and the model's learned priors.
The result is richer, more diverse high-frequency detail — fabric weave, pore texture, hair strand separation — that a single-pass GAN would over-smooth or invent inconsistently.
What SeedVR2 Does Especially Well
Facial detail
SeedVR2 reconstructs iris texture, pore structure, and hair strand clarity at levels that GAN models compress. The 16B parameter scale gives it a richer internal model of what human faces look like at high resolution.
Fabric and textile texture
Knit patterns, denim weave, and silk sheen — SeedVR2 hallucunates these convincingly because its training data included enough high-resolution textile content to internalize the pattern statistics.
JPEG artifact correction
Compressed images with heavy block artifacts are a known weakness of GAN upscalers, which tend to sharpen the blocks. SeedVR2's iterative denoising smooths artifacts naturally before reconstructing detail.
Video temporal consistency
SeedVR2 Video uses cross-frame attention to maintain consistent detail placement across frames, eliminating the "shimmer" artifact common in frame-by-frame processing.
SeedVR2 vs Real-ESRGAN: When to Switch
Real-ESRGAN processes images in 2–5 seconds. SeedVR2 takes 15–45 seconds. For most production workflows, the right strategy is to use Real-ESRGAN as the default and escalate to SeedVR2 for:
- ›Portrait and face-heavy images viewed at large scale
- ›Archival photos being printed at 20"+
- ›Hero product images for high-traffic pages
- ›Heavily JPEG-compressed sources
- ›Video footage being restored for broadcast or theatrical exhibition

Frequently Asked Questions
What is SeedVR2?
SeedVR2 is a 16-billion-parameter video and image upscaling model developed by ByteDance. It uses a diffusion-based architecture to reconstruct high-frequency detail iteratively, producing sharper and more detailed output than traditional GAN-based upscalers, especially on faces and complex textures.
Is SeedVR2 available for image upscaling, not just video?
No. SeedVR2 is retired on UpRes. Still photos that need invented detail use Mirage. Video uses Motion or Motion X. Faces use Visage, which does not enlarge the frame.
Why is SeedVR2 slower than Real-ESRGAN?
Diffusion models work by iteratively denoising a latent representation over multiple steps (typically 20–50). Each step requires a full model forward pass through a 16B parameter network. Real-ESRGAN processes an image in a single forward pass through a much smaller network. The quality difference justifies the time for high-fidelity use cases.
