Upscale scanned photos with Flare

A 600 DPI scan of a 4x6 print comes out around 2400x1600. That is fine on screen and underwhelming at 10x8 print size. Flare 4x takes it to 9600x6400, sharper than the original print ever was.

Flare adds nothing. Output is built only from detail already in your file, so the result stays true to what you uploaded. More about Flare

Why Flare for scanned photos

  • Handles the paper grain and dust of a flatbed scan without amplifying it.
  • Cheap enough to run over a shoebox of prints in one sitting.
  • Faithful, which matters when the scan is the only surviving copy.

Workflow

  1. 1Scan at 600 DPI or higher, 48-bit colour if your scanner offers it.
  2. 2Clean dust and scratches before upscaling, not after.
  3. 3Upload the cleaned scan to UpRes and pick Flare at 4x.
  4. 4Archive both the raw scan and the upscale.

Honest caveat

If the print itself is faded or the scan is under 300 DPI, Lumen recovers more and is worth the extra time on an irreplaceable image.
